Clay Conley, from Buccan Palm Beach, receives his seventh Best Chef in the South nomination by the James Beard Foundation

In the prestigious James Beard Awards of 2024, often likened to the culinary world's Oscars, a standout chef from Palm Beach has been shortlisted in the semifinals, marking his seventh appearance at this stage.

Clay Conley, acclaimed for his innovative approach at Buccan Palm Beach, a contemporary American bistro, has been recognized in the “Best Chef: South” category. The foundation made this announcement early Wednesday, featuring Conley among 22 notable chefs. His distinct culinary style, characterized by inventive small plates, has notably reshaped dining on the island.

Conley's journey to this achievement has been supported by his dedicated team at Buccan, where he remains actively involved in the kitchen. His career, spanning over a decade since Buccan's opening in January 2011, has seen him maintain a balance between professional demands and personal life. This balance has been further enhanced since August 2022 when Conley moved to a farmhouse near Gainesville. There, he embraces rural living, cultivating vegetables and raising animals, while commuting to Palm Beach to oversee Buccan and his other establishments, Imoto and Grato.

His inclusion in the semifinals is a testament to Florida's burgeoning culinary scene, as he is among six chefs from the state in his category and the sole representative from Palm Beach County this year. Last year, five local chefs received similar recognition.

The James Beard Awards also highlight other Florida chefs in various categories. Notables include Miami's Valerie Chang, celebrated for her Peruvian cuisine, and Tristen Epps, known for his Trinidadian-inspired dishes. Orlando's culinary scene is represented by Jennifer and Mark Berdin of Kadence and Henry Moso of Kabooki Sushi. The state's baking and pastry talents are recognized too, with Zak Stern of Zak the Baker in Wynwood, Jesús and Manuel Brazón of Caracas Bakery in Doral, and Miami Beach's Macchialina. Additionally, Webb’s City Cellar in St. Petersburg has earned a spot in the “Outstanding Bar” category.

The finalists will be announced on April 3, with the winners celebrated at a grand event at the Lyric Opera of Chicago on June 10. Conley's inclusion in this prestigious list highlights not just his culinary excellence but also the diverse and rich culinary culture flourishing in Florida.
